Taiko Drumming and Dance

April 7, 2010

Welcome, Tamagawa University!

Students from Tamagawa University in Japan performed at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia as part of the Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival.

Grace found out about the show, which she was raving about. She’s a dancer and performing arts teacher and described the art of Taiko at bit to me and her friend Ken. She promised it would be energetic and colorful, and it certainly was!

In this particular dance, the female dancer acts like a string puppet.

Back to the drumming…

More dance…

I felt like I was traveling again and watching a performance abroad.

They also did combination dancing/drumming.

Finale:

Grace pointed out that their arms are pretty amazing because drumming like that is a crazy hard work out (not sure if you can see it in the videos or not).

Going to events like this one makes me love Philadelphia. There’s always something going on! And this was a FREE student performance, which just goes to show you that everyone can enjoy the arts in this city! I was certainly entertained.
